My students are awesome. The majority of our students are at the poverty level and are identified as at-risk learners. The challenge I face as their classroom teacher is to provide an environment conducive to learning and to motivate them to take an active role in their education. My students love it when I tell them to "get comfortable, it's time to learn" because they know that that means they may come to the carpet where I am and this motivates them to take an active role in learning their math skills. It warms my heart to see at-risk students excited about learning math. Many of these students do not like to be confined to a desk and they quickly lose interest in learning when forced to do so. I wish you could see their enthusiasm when allowed to move to the carpet during math instruction. It is amazing how something so simple could make such an impact in a students' interest in learning.
