Students are 15-year-old freshmen who are enrolled in mainstream and honors English 1-2. The school is an inner-city school with students who take advantage of government subsidies, such as free and reduced-price lunch, and public transportation. The curriculum is primarily run on handouts. When working with longer copyrighted works, such as a novella or a play, it is problematic for students to locate free online copies or locate copies in the local library. To give students equal access to a paperback version of Of Mice and Men, a class set available to students for in-class and at-home use would benefit students by giving them the experience of simply holding and working through a book from cover to cover. Up to now, they have had to work through rather short handouts that they seem to discard after use. With a book, perhaps students will understand the permanency of words and will revisit the text in their later academic studies.
