My students attend an alternative school because they have struggled at mainstream high schools. They are often labeled as "bad" or "troublemakers," but they are not bad kids. They simply need more one-on-one attention and help. Forty to fifty percent of the students are minorities, and many of those speak English as a second language. Many of the students are also reluctant readers, and many others struggle with reading due to disabilities or second-language issues. These students are also at a disadvantage because many do not receive support at home from their parents, especially not support for education. However, these students can be successful with encouragement from a good teacher and high-quality learning materials.
