My students are of diverse ethnic groups with Latinos being the most prevalent. They (my students) enjoy playing math games in small groups, sharing their writing aloud with the whole class, and they are usually a very intelligent student population. Providence (located in RI) is one of the top 5 high-poverty, high immigration cities in the United States. It's a privilege to be their 2nd grade teacher. Our school is a very small but successful inner-city school with 12 classrooms including one ELL and one Reg-Ed classroom in all grades. In the recent past, (as a school) we have met and/or exceeded our Annual Yearly Progress every year in both math and literacy. Because it is a small school there is a greater opportunity to identify and address the needs of any struggling students academically. I have also found that parents are willing to act on any feedback and suggestions that comes from the school.
