Most of my students would tell you they have never read a book before in their life, but I know that's a lie. I know that there has been at least one cherished story woven into my students' being so inextricably that they have long forgotten it's not a part of their own. My students attend school because they are hungry. Ninety eight percent of them receive free and reduced lunch, but that is not why they are starving. They have been craving engagement since elementary school. Seventy five percent of my students read at basic or below basic level in high school. They have long since forgotten the taste of excitement in reading and may never have learned how to chew through the accumulation of experiences books have to offer. When I started teaching on my current campus, I was warned at curriculum planning with supervisors of the futility and uselessness of getting students to read a whole book. So we started reading them under our desks. Three years later, we don't have to hide.
