My students face many academic, social, gross motor, and fine motor difficulties. Research has shown that yoga has an amazing impact in building self-esteem as well as a student's ability to focus on their learning.
My special education students not only have difficulty learning various tasks but many also struggle with gross and fine motor activities.
They receive all of their academics in my classroom and receive adaptive physical education class instead of the traditional gym class.
My Project
We will continue having weekly Yoga sessions for 30 minutes in our classroom. Our speech therapist comes in and works on following directions skills and communication and the occupational therapist works on the motor aspects of the yoga positions. I would love to have real yoga mats for my students since we currently use bed sheets on the floor as our "yoga mats." They do slip and we have to be careful to avoid any injuries. Many of the yoga positions would be so much easier for them if they each had their own mat.
Research has shown that yoga not only raises the self-esteem of kids but also helps with their ability to focus.
My students work so hard on their academics and yoga in my classroom has helped them learn how to focus their attention. Actually having real yoga mats in the classroom for them would not only excite them but it would help them learn better techniques since they would be using the proper equipment.
