My students need a new table for a collaborative-learning station because the one we use collapses when they lean on it!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third-grade scholars are at the age where they can make many of their own decisions, including on a daily basis whether they are going to "learn or lose." To encourage them to "learn," they track their daily behavior and academics in their own data binders, which allow them to see their progress.
The majority of my scholars do not have the traditional socio-economic environment that contributes to academic success.
But I can say without a doubt that each of them has at least one family member who cares deeply about them. Two years ago, our school was in such deep distress that the state deemed it a "turn-around" school, hiring an entirely new staff and administration charged with improving academics, student attendance, and parental involvement. Scholars, all of whom are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, are now required to wear uniforms and to live by the tenet, "Scholars are respectful, responsible and ready to learn at all times," Teachers are expected to teach the Common Core standards with rigor and an expectation that every scholar can and will learn at a higher level. I can say that in my experience at this school, most of the scholars and their families have attempted to reach these goals to the best of their abilities. This has made for a rewarding experience.
My Project
Because my school is in an urban district we don't always have access to the resources we need, especially when it comes to the "big-ticket" items, such as classroom furniture. Much of my classroom's furniture is literally on its last legs. This is "no pun intended" for the room's U-shaped reading table, which I found in an unused classroom two years ago. Finally, after much use, one of the table's legs broke when a scholar jumped on it during recess. While the custodian has repaired it numerous times, the bottom of the table will no longer hold the screws and we need a pile of bins and books to prop it up. As it is the only large surface area in my classroom, the new table will be used for everything...small reading groups, math intervention activities and science experiments. This table setting will teach scholars how to behave in small-group settings and also how to collaborate with their peers.
My scholars rarely have access to anything that isn't a "hand-me-down" in the classroom unless I purchase the materials myself.
Broken, graffiti-covered desks and chairs send a message that "no one cares." In addition to creating low morale, these items are unsafe. With a new reading table, my scholars will know that their lives matter and that there are people in the world who want the best for them.
