This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever signed up for an activity and been handed materials that were falling apart? My students try their best with extremely old and poor condition materials every day, and yet I still see them succeed. Only imagine what would happen if they had quality instruments to play with!

We are a junior high located in Southern California.

My school is in a high poverty area. Approximately 70% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch and walk to school, often more than a mile, every day. Our school has been making large leaps in the area of raising our test scores. We have grants from colleges who run programs at our school to help the students raise their grades, and we run a lot of after-school programs to help the students. Due to all of these programs, we received the highest possible rating when compared to other schools in similar demographic and economic conditions. My program includes an orchestra, band, and jazz band consisting of about 240 students. Around 98% of my students borrow an instrument from the school. At our winter concert, we entertain an audience of over 600 people.

My Project

My band students will use this xylophone while learning a vast variety of percussion instruments! We currently have a bass drum, a drum set, bells, a vibraphone, cymbals, and accessory percussion. The xylophone will open up new sounds for our group and even add another student slot to this section of the ensemble.

My project is important because my students deserve a chance to learn how to play an instrument, in a community where their parents would never be able to afford an instrument or lessons for them.

It will make a life-long difference for them.
