My Students

“Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.” ― Joyce Carol Oates This is how my students described their feelings when reading. They also confessed that it takes their minds off of negative things.

We are a Title I public elementary school with a total of about 400 students and over half of these students read below grade level.

The students in my school rarely check out books from the library, which would help their reading, because they feel that the books are boring and old. Because of budget cuts, we are not able to order new books every year. With the use of e-readers, the students will have access to multiple genres of interesting books to choose from and encourage them to read more. As Dr. Suess says, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

My Project

Living in the 21st century, technology has become very important to our society. Technology can accelerate, enrich, and deepen our basic skills. The e-readers that I am requesting will allow the students to use 21st century technology and also have access to multiple genres of books. The students will be able to read books that they normally would not have access to. Reading more will also help the students with their writing skills. They take an annual writing assessment every year and exposing the students to a variety of books, will deepen their ability to write better papers. I feel that using technology to read will encourage the students to read more and make it fun.

This project is very important and will be a positive influence on all students in the school.

Reading a variety of books will allow the students to be exposed to things other than what they see on an everyday basis. These e-readers will increase their reading ability and provide them the skills they need in order to be proficient on state assessments.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
