Worms, Dirt, & the Earth: Adventures in Composting!
My students need two see through compost kits, journals, markers, sticky notes, a Cricut machine, paper, and books about composting to experience and understand how they can care for the earth.
My students are unique learners. They have various disabilities that make learning in traditional ways challenging for them. They come to school each day ready to work hard in order to learn and make progress academically. I do my best to teach them and encourage them to persevere... we talk often about how we can learn from our mistakes and keep moving forward.
They are some of the most joyful and positive kids and make teaching exciting and fun!
My students have so many challenges to overcome each day and they always do it with a smile. It is an honor to help them learn and grow in the classroom. These students work hard each and every day and it is such a gift to work with them.
My Project
My students need to learn how they can take care of our earth. They will utilize the see through compost kits to watch how different materials decompose and how certain materials do not. They will use these materials to create science journals to record their notes and observations along the way.
My students thrive when learning through hands on experiences.
Having see through compost kits will allow my students to see items decomposing over time. I will give my students background knowledge and teach them the process of composting through the picture books that we will read together in class. We will use the notebooks to take notes about composting and then record their observations over time of the compost kits. The students will be able to use the cricut machine, Astro-brights paper, pens, sticky notes, lamination sheets, and velcro to create interactive notebooks to help them fully grasp the concepts taught.
By learning how to compost and how beneficial it is to our earth my students will be able to recreate this process in their own lives. This project will inspire students with special needs to develop a passion for caring about their planet. They will compost together as a group and see how they can incorporate this practice into their own lives. By creating journals about composting my students will have a concrete science journal to take home and reference for future composting adventures!
