My Students

After years of using basal readers, our school is launching into the Daily 5.

My first grade students live in a small, rural town in southern Missouri.

The vast majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and face many struggles at home. But my students come to school every day ready to learn. They are an energetic and caring bunch of students who are continuously working hard in school!

My Project

Word work is one of the five elements my students will be focusing on in the Daily 5 reading program. In order to enrich their daily word study, I want to provide a wide variety of methods and hands-on materials. Students will build and spell words using alphabet sponge painters, dough stampers, wikki stix, and magnetic word building boards. Desk caddies will help organize materials so they are easily accessible for independent work and clean up.

Supplying a wide variety of materials will provide my students with the tools they need to creatively build and spell words.

These kinesthetic activities will allow them to work independently as they develop the skills to become better readers, writers, and spellers!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
