Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being a teenage girl in high school can be a difficult task for anyone. This time in a young woman's life can bring about many changes and challenges. On top of those everyday obstacles, there are many girls at my school that have other factors in their life that make growing up a difficult task.

The girls in our Women to Women (W2) mentoring group, are girls that we have identified as having uncontrollable factors in their lives that hinder their actions.

We have developed this group to help girls that have witnessed or been a victim of abuse. We help girls that may be going through teenage pregnancy or difficult relationships in their lives. We also focus on academics, behavior management, and truancy issues. At this time we have a group of 22 girls that have each been assigned a mentor in the school setting. As a mentor we meet with our mentee at minimum once a week just to "check up" on them. This includes asking how there day is to school or home concerns. Once a month, we hold a luncheon where we can meet with the girls as a whole. This is a time where these materials will be utilized. Our goal is to give these girls guidance in respecting themselves and others, succeeding academically and socially, and providing them with life skills that will promote a healthy lifestyle

My Project

The materials requested are to be utilized in a group setting of about 20-25 young women. The purpose of the group is to teach our young girls the proper way to handle themselves in given situations. The majority of our girls react without thinking based on what they have seen or learned from their surroundings. Through this mentoring group, we as mentors will use the materials to teach the girls etiquette techniques, how to deal with bullies, and how to hold healthy relationships. The materials will be a great asset to our monthly Women to Women luncheons. It will give us an opportunity to speak to the girls about difficult topics and provide them with activities and videos about changing lifestyles. The materials being requested are the tools we need to demonstrate appropriate behavior and attitude. The materials will provide real world examples and allow the girls to role play proper etiquette. These girls want to do well, but many of them just need to learn how to do well!

This donation will definitely make an impact on young women's lives in a positive manner.

Many times young women feel uncomfortable about themselves and act out as a result. Other times other factors such as abuse and abandonment make life even harder for a teenage girl. Help us lead these girls in the right direction to succeed in life. With your help we can prove to these girls that they deserve to be respected, what it takes to be respected, and what a difference a positive attitude can make!
