Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Special needs students are the most spectacular and wonderful learners in school today. I teach a primary multiple disabilities classroom with thirteen students ranging in age from five to eight. I have a wide range of functioning levels within my classroom which is challenging when trying to meet each individual student's needs. However, every student in my classroom loves music and I would like to give them the opportunity to expand and develop this interest within the classroom using the proposed instruments and music CDs.

The obstacle that I must overcome in helping my students to develop a love of music is that I do not have musical instruments and CDs that will provide them with wonderful experiences. We have made some basic instruments and improvised with some older discarded items, but a set of new and appropriate instruments with music CDs that will motivate them would open an entire new musical world for my students.

I need a new set of real life band instruments that my special needs students can actually use. I would like instruments that we can talk and learn about. I would be thankful for music CDs that I had everyday access to instead of borrowing and returning the damaged ones from the library. With the new instruments and CDs, my students would learn how to make and enjoy music. A whole new world would be opened to them and as students with special learning needs, every concrete and real tool that I can provide to them increases their opportunities for learning and joy.

With your help, I can give my students the opportunities that most take for granted. I cannot hope that my students might get exposure to the joy that music can bring. Together we can give my very special students the opportunity that everyone deserves.
