Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students became extremely curious about animals during a recent non-fiction unit of study we conducted during our Reader's Workshop. Students who hadn't wanted to pick up a book all year became fascinated with animals and read nearly every Zoobook my classroom contained.
Another passion I know my students have is poetry. They've told me that they cannot wait for our unit of study on poetry, which will be coming up in April of this year. However, the brick buildings and concrete sidewalks that make up our East Harlem community offer little inspiration for poetry. Hence, my desire to take my students to the Bronx Zoo for a workshop entitled "Wild Poetry."
With the Bronx Zoo's incredible animals and naturalistic exhibits as their inspiration, my students will enhance their observation skills and build their word lists as they learn how to write an ode to a toad or some creative words about birds. In the classroom, students will be introduced to amazing animal adaptations, and explore five fundamental forms of poetry, as part of this literacy-based look at the wonders of nature.
Due to the financial hardships of my students, a trip like this will not be possible if I don't get your help. Your donation will make it possible for all of my bright, inquisitive students to travel to the Bronx Zoo for this exciting workshop combining their love of animals with their desire to write their own poetry.
