My Students

We began the school year reading and writing narrative fiction, and I would like the students to end the year with memoir reading and a more reflective narrative writing experience.

My ninth grade students are varied in ability.

I have voracious readers and some reluctant readers that I work with. Our school includes a base of financially secure households and also has many students in more precarious situations. It is ethnically diverse but not fully integrated at the upper levels of courses. My students work hard and have made gains over the school year in reading and writing.

My Project

Students will read either a copy of Into the Wild (which the school has already) or Wild (the donors choose book I am requesting) and meet in literature circles to discuss the book. They will also construct a personal narrative based on their own experiences and reflect on how they have grown in their ability to construct narratives from the beginning of the year until now.

The students are really looking forward to having two book options for the final narrative unit.

The school already has Into the Wild, and the addition of Wild as an option would allow students to choose. Student choice is positively correlated with student success. They haven't had book choice all year, and this is a gift that I hope to give them for the final unit.
