My Students

I have priced out Interactive Whiteboards and the cost to purchase and install them are about 3 to 5 thousand dollars. Using a $500 dollar slate with inking capabilities and a projector that I've recently bought myself will allow the students to achieve the same results for a fraction of the costs.

My school is a magnet school in an urban setting.

The students perform well but are often forgotten in terms of finances in a large district that is already broke. The mindset is, "They already perform without the monies... so why do we need to fund them?". Unfortunately, the we can't be further from the truth to that statement and the students are using Pentium 4's and iMac's from 2002 in two of our three labs.

My Project

I want my students to feel that when they enter my room that they can make the connection with the technology they have at home and interact with and learn from... to be available in my classroom. While there is nothing wrong with chalk and talk, I feel that the students' attention must constantly be upshifted / downshifted more often. With a technology piece involved, their attention is carried longer and retention has been higher. The great perk to all of this is for my students with special needs who have issues with note taking. The tablet will be able to serve as their notebook. I will be able to take screen captures using the tablets specialized software to save to their "education social media" website Edmodo. This is where my students find their homework, notes, and grades relevant to their class.

Without this technology, these students are being told they aren't worth their intelligence.

They see and hear about how their friends in other schools get really amazing funds and technology... and this is just around the corner from their homes. But our students travel from all over the city for the academic rigor only to be given less than what they could have. I am trying to level the playing field and bring them closer to the content.
