My Students

Remember how exciting it was to watch a video in class, and how easy it was to remember the lessons from the video? I can still sing the songs from those Schoolhouse Rock videos from elementary school! My 21st century students need art education resources that are engaging and memorable.

I teach art to about 350 preschool-6th grade students in a diverse public Montessori school situated within a high-need, urban area.

My school is very unique in that, while it is a public school, it is a Montessori Magnet school - meaning that teachers implement the philosophy of a Montessori education while still being held accountable to state standards. Art is supposed to be integrated into the daily Montessori classroom experience, although due to limited time (and so many things to teach!), some students only receive art for 40 minutes a week. Therefore, I try to fill every minute we have with opportunities to learn about new artists, art-making techniques and explore new artistic mediums.

My Project

Being able to show video clips would help the history of the art and artists come alive for my students. These DVDs are interactive and encourage students to evaluate the many paintings as they are presented. At the end of the video viewers are asked to match the artwork to the artist. I plan to use excerpts from the DVDs when teaching about new styles and movements in art to introduce it in a way that is appealing to the students. I know that this format would be fun and engaging for my students, in addition to building their critical thinking skills. They would enhance their art vocabulary, learn to compare artwork, and discuss the elements of art as they view it.
