Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Have you ever wondered what animals are represented in the food chain? Is it possible to find evidence of them? Yes? How? Owl Pellets? The students will examine the owl pellets to see what the owls have previously eaten to see what animals have been present in the food web.

My students live in South Georgia near a military base.

Most are military students who constantly move all over the world, so we have a large group of transient students due to the military base. We also have a large number of high poverty students. Our students are extremely diverse and work very hard to be college and career ready.

My Project

The students will become detectives as they sift through fragments of bone and compare them to the bone chart to see if they can tell what animal they came from. Then the student will compare that information to the various food webs that they have and make their conclusions. They will be able to trace that owl's history by tracing the owl pellet. My students need owl pellets, the bone sorting charts, a food web diagram, and nitrile gloves for protection while examining the owl pellets.

Students should be able to learn a lot about themselves in comparison to the owls, since doctors and forensic scientists are able to tell a lot about where we have been by our remains as well.

Please help my students make the connections. We are wanting to dissect owl pellets to learn how to trace the owl's progression through the food chain.
