Which Came First: Rocks or Minerals?

My students need rock and mineral samples to have a more accurate way of identification of each and to be able to recognize the differences between rocks and minerals.

My Students

"Geologists have a saying - rocks remember." Neil Armstrong. But what is a rock?

I am teaching Earth Science for the first time in a very small, rural high school in North Carolina.

We are surrounded by mountains made up of rocks and minerals. All major categories to cover within the course The community in general is very low income so purchasing resources is difficult. Having hands on materials like these sets of rocks and minerals is invaluable to my students learning and remembering.

My Project

I can not envision teaching science without hands-on activities. To be able to hold samples in your hands and test them for hardness, luster, streak and more is not only part of the curriculum, but a fun way to learn and remember the information. The rock kits fall into three categories: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic which are involved in the rock cycle. Then on to classifying some very spectacular minerals. How else can a person teach this without labs?

I appreciate anything that can be done to help these students learn better.

Living in a rural area places these students at a disadvantage already as compared to larger schools. Thanks in advance for being involved.
