My Students

Do you remember those moments right before a celebration where your insides are just screaming with anticipation about the events that are about to take place? The excitement and thrill of what's to come. There are those where the unknown ushers in feelings of anxiety and worry...

We are in a district in central Indiana working to provide the most appropriate educational experiences possible for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in grades early childhood through high school.

Transitioning from task to task increases level of uncertainty and worry for some students who have a need to know "what's next and then what?" We would like to provide our educators and these students with means possible to increase communication and ease tension with transitions.

My Project

The first item we have requested are a tactile sensory bar that is about the size and shape of a school ruler, is portable, and has various textures upon it to assist students who may experience sensory overload and need a way to calm themselves and collect their thoughts. The second item we requested is a "What's Next?" bag. This will allow personnel the means to prepare a "to go" bag of visual, sensory, and communication items when student are out of their regular environment, for example field trips, and may need additional prompts. The third item is a Go Talk recorder, which will allow instructors to verbally and in picture form relay the expectations of the student so the student knows what to do in order to complete each task independently. These three portable resources will allow instructors the means to provide communication, safety, and support to students regardless of location and/or situation.

Every student should feel safe and secure in his/her school setting.

What better way to do this than to ease tension and increase excitement of learning for those who do best when they know what to expect, what to do, and when they are finished with each activity? Comfort of students increases productivity and opportunity for new experiences.
