What's Happening?

My students need 40 subscriptions to The New York Times Upfront to have exposure to a larger environment. The world is a larger community than the one in which they live, work and play. This will broaden their horizons.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The greatest challenge for the community is to think globally outside of our neighborhood. Our students are 97% homogeneous and exposure to world culture, politics, entertainment, and people of diverse ethnicities will develop their dreams and help them to be more inclusive of the world.

The students are young adults like everywhere.

Their culture is homogeneous and most of their thoughts, actions and festivities center around this culture. In fact, the only foreign language offered is one which they already speak at home. When new ideas, cultures, and people are introduced, they are intrigued and eager to learn more. It is a pleasure to see them exposed to various influences. Many of them continue to explore and discover once they are introduced. Our school is in the heart of a large city downtown. Their opportunities are boundless with many foreign travelers, delegates, consuls, and business from around the world. This small learning community is dedicated to business and tourism. The students need exposure to make them better candidates in this global work environment.

My Project

The students do research for projects about multiple countries. This particular magazine for them will offer more current information than books or old sources on the internet. Using a magazine that they can actually hold in their hand will give them the tactile experience of seeing the news outside of a glowing screen. While the internet is a tremendous resource, there is something very good about having more than one type of media source -- books and magazines/journals provide that stimulus. There are many different learning types and while one style of resource may appeal to many, other types will appeal to others. It is our mentoring in various styles that reaches more students. This resource will help to provide a better and well-rounded learning experience for the students.

The world moves fast.

Media flies by us at warp speed. Information is overwhelming and confusing. By having and using this resource, the students will have more focus. The students (our future) will learn great habits and have greater skills for their (and our) future. If asked, most adults will tell you about the biweekly or monthly magazine they read in elementary school. This resource for the students will give them that same memory.
