What?!?! No Glass?!?!

My students need 14 different glass materials, along with wire, fiber shelf paper and glass adhesives, to create abstract fused glass jewelry pieces for a sculpture unit!

My Students

“What do you mean we aren't making jewelry this year”, ask my perceptive eighth graders.

They had seen every other class of eighth graders proudly wearing their jewelry leaving the art room!

My current 8th graders anticipate creating their own abstract fused glass pieces, almost as a symbol or rite of passage as the oldest kids in our school. However, I have to break the harsh news to them that the art department does not have the money for glass this year. My students come to my art classroom with very limited art knowledge or exposure. I teach at a low income, high poverty area in Northwest Indiana. The financial situations at home do not allow for extras like glue, scissors, colored pencils, let alone specialty materials like clay or glass. For many, walking into my art room is their only opportunity to express their creativity. Since opportunities for my art-thirsty, young Picasso's are so limited, I try to provide a rich art environment with as many art forms as possible as I can get my hands on. Fused glass is just that!

My Project

This project has become a rite of passage for the 8th graders! They explore the meaning of art through works of glass before experiencing the process of melted glass. The pieces created are turned into necklace pendants, brooches, and earrings. Fused glass jewelry pieces are a prized possession for my students. They get to become jewelry designers to create an unusual, unique piece of jewelry that they show off the minute they hit the runway…ahem, hallway! I am fortunate to have a kiln provided at the school to fire the glass. It’s just the supplies that are missing!

Fused glass jewelry is a prized possession for my students.

It is my hope that I will be able to surprise them with the materials and offer the same memorable, identity building project for this year’s deserving 8th graders.
