My Students

Can you imagine the logistics of working on a reading or math lesson with children squeezed awkwardly around an ill-fitting table? Sometimes there is not enough room for the children to write or to manipulate objects effectively. The situation is frustrating for the children (and teacher)!

My students are eager first graders from a poor, inner-city neighborhood.

They walk to school among abandoned, boarded-up buildings. Miraculously they arrive at school eager to learn and demanding quality time with their teacher! When I need to work with small groups of children, it is often difficult. If the children sit on the floor, they cannot write very well. If seated at a round table, only the children nearest me can see the materials well.

My Project

I am requesting a large kidney-shaped table where 6-8 children can fit easily around the teacher. When small-group work is needed to review skills or to practice concepts such as making correct change, an adequate space is needed. The children need room to spread out their papers and supplies. They also need to have clear eye contact with the teacher without having to sit at uneven surfaces. Each child can see and hear the teacher and have room to do their work!

Your help will benefit the boys and girls tremendously!

It will create a better teaching situation for many different skills. No longer will we have an awkward area to work! The table and chairs will be a delight for many years to come!
