What Can the Matter Be?

My students need a parachute, balls, a set of graduated cylinders, magnetic marbles, 2 copies each of 3 books about Matter and 7 copies of "Pancakes, Pancakes!", by Eric Carle.

Mrs. McKibben Pickaway Elementary School
Circleville, OH Grades 3-5

Teaching 4th graders is a dream come true! I have the joy of working everyday with a group of unique learners who love to explore the world through inquisitive eyes. They are forever asking questions and searching for answers.

The students are particularly interested in the physical world around them. I work very hard to teach them about matter and changes in their world, but these can be very abstract concepts for 9 and 10 year olds. These learners need more than pictures in a textbook and teacher demonstrations. They need to be involved and to have hands-on experiences. I want to provide the students with concrete examples that will stick with them and lead to authentic learning rather than just memorizing facts only to forget them weeks later. While I have some household items in the classroom for experiments, I do not have all of the materials needed to teach more engaging physical science lessons.

To engage my students I want to help them actually experience the states of matter. Our classroom needs a parachute and plastic balls to simulate the movement of molecules and build excitement. This will allow the students to be involved physically and it will provide a meaningful, visual lesson. Also the students will use magnetic marbles to illustrate the bonds in the states of matter. Both of these activities will be valuable to all levels of learners as they allow students to see the science behind the objects. Along with the hands on activities, I want to provide colorful books written at the reading level of my learners so that they can explore the concept of matter in depth beyond the textbook. To teach the concept of changes in matter, I want to use an Eric Carle book to incorporate literature and reader's theater into our science lesson. Our culminating activity will involve identifying examples in the book and then making pancakes in the classroom to explore the states of matter and the changes that happen as we are cooking. The students will be involved in every part from using graduated cylinders to measure ingredients to observing changes during the cooking process.

Your help with this project will make it possible for my students to take an abstract concept and make it more concrete. The materials will allow me to better meet the needs of all learners and to allow our science lessons to be student centered rather than just teacher demonstrated. Science plays a major part of our day. The students look forward to science time and their excitement when we are able to do experiments is unbelievable. By helping to provide these materials, you will be helping my students to experience and internalize concepts that they will reflect on throughout their school career.
