What a World! Kids and Cultures

My students need books and resources to learn about children and cultures around the world, and a globe to see what part of the world they are learning about.

My Students

Lose a tooth and throw it on the roof? Kids who hunt for duck eggs and dogsled but also eat chips and watch television? These are things my students would love to learn about. How kids in other places live very differently, but also much the same as they do.

My students are 2nd and 3rd graders who are very interested in the world around them.

They love to hear each others' stories. They also love to hear stories of times in the past. They really love to hear stories about people and animals from other places. We are a nature immersion charter school. Part of learning about our environment is learning about how human choices effect nature and how nature helps humans. Learning about other places and cultures helps us learn about how others respect the natural world and how other environments help sustain human life.

My Project

Complex ideas about a complex world; the people, animals and plants in it; and different lifestyles, can be hard for children to comprehend. Understanding of this topic begins by reading about other people groups, cooking their traditional foods, playing their games, and making their crafts. It starts with learning about varieties of animals in the world and comparing them to the animals in our world. Seeing differences and similarities in plant life and how they are used for food, clothing, and medicines help to make sense of the vast world we live in.

This project will help my students to be aware of people groups, traditions, and lifestyles around the world.

It will start them thinking globally and may spark an interest to learn more as they grow older.
