My Students

We have been slaving all year learning to write five paragraph essays in preparation for our statewide writing assessment. As a reward, I would like to offer my students one final writing project: to write their DESCRIPTIONS of the beautiful Luna Moth!

My students are the most talented group of writers that I've taught!

They have taken everything I've taught them and applied it consistently. All of this despite the fact that possibly 80% of my students are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high poverty and at risk.

My Project

Our statewide assessment includes Narrative and Descriptive writing types for third grade students. We have learned and practiced both types with diligence. With this project, my students will be able to write a descriptive essay using the five senses to describe one of the most fascinating and beautiful creatures known. I know that many of my students have never heard of, let alone seen a Luna moth. But, this experience will bring them up close and personal with one of nature's most amazing insects! They will learn about the life cycle and span of these creatures as well as observe them emerging from their cocoons. In culmination we will have a release party, in which we will share our writing with parents, teachers, and administrators.

This project will impact my students by rewarding their efforts with our assessment, as well as giving them an experience with nature that they might not otherwise have.

They will also be sharing the experience with their families, which will impact our community as well.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
