Think about the heroes you had when you were a child. George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Amelia Earhart are some that may come to mind. Today's students may have heroes that are pop singers or football players, who may or may not be a good role model.
We are a small charter school located in central Texas.
We are a Title I school, targeting children who may come from a challenging background. For many of our students, the school library is their only source of reading material. Our library budget is small, and must cover the needs of two elementary schools. Most of our collection have come from donations and grants, and many of the books are worn and dated.
My Project
We are looking for high-quality books about genuine heroes, both current and historical. We want books about people whom our students can look to as examples of our school's core values: Responsibility, Creativity, Curiosity, Integrity, and Hard Work. Our Biography section is small; less that 250 titles between both campuses. The majority of the books in the collection are ten years or older. Our teachers teach the Core Values daily, and these books can be used by them in the classroom to help students learn exactly what that value looks like. They can also be used by the students who enjoy reading books about real people.
Students are surrounded by images of people in the media who may not make good choices.
These books can show students that even though you come from challenging circumstances, you can overcome those challenges to achieve great things. These books can show reluctant readers that books can be found that are topics that are pertinent and interesting to them.
