We're Half Way There! E-Readers for A School Without A Library

My students need 4 E-Readers and covers to use for daily reading and researching purposes.

My Students

Remember what it was like to be able to browse shelves of books at your school library, knowing that thousands of (free) adventures were at your fingertips? My students do not have this luxury because our school does not have a library. Share the adventures you loved through E-Readers!

I work at a Title 1 school where, by the time students have made it to 9th grade, they have been under-served.

The majority of my students read at a 5th-6th grade level, some much lower. They are a talkative, spirited, colorful bunch who chose this school to learn more about technology. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, students can go weeks before they have access to the one laptop cart I am able to check out for my classroom. Our school does not have a library where my eager students can pour over book selections, nor where my reluctant readers can be turned on to a librarian's "great read" suggestion. They come to me, a first year teacher, with a tiny personal budget, who tries to fund all of the books they're dreaming of on her own. I want my kids to feel the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes from reading books they like and that they choose. I want them to feel connections to other readers and start to imagine the vast possibilities life holds through access to books.

My Project

The E-Readers in my class will serve several purposes. First, students will be able to download books for free and read the same books at the same time as others. Second, they will support our mission to develop technologically fluent individuals. Additionally, students reading well below grade level will have anonymity and not be embarrassed if they are reading an "easy" book. They can use the technology to look up unknown words, use the audio option to hear the selections read aloud, and annotate as they actively read. I see the E-Readers playing a significant role in weekly lessons - they will be used every week for "Fun Reading Friday" and every other day for literature circle reading time in preparation for discussion. E-Readers make reading fun for the kids. The more they read things they like, the more likely they will become lifelong, independent readers with increased fluency.

Your donation will spark an excitement about reading in my kids who are hungry for escapism from their challenging lives.

They are bright and will only get brighter with your support. One teacher trying to provide a missing school library cannot make the same impact that 5 E-Readers with endless options can. They will bring confidence to my reluctant readers, happiness to my book nerds, and warmth of heart to all who see what the kindness of strangers can do for children in need.
