Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The world is a book, those who never leave home read only a page." These 6th grade students will be leaving home during spring 2013 to embark on a study abroad in Costa Rica. None of them have cameras and it will be important for them to capture the memories they make that will last a lifetime.

The students you see in the picture have never left the state of Texas, and until this year never thought that they ever would.

These 12 students have been selected to travel to Costa Rica next spring break. This will only be possible through a great deal of fundraising, support from donors, and dedication from their teachers and parents. My students are considered high poverty and a trip abroad has never been attempted at my school. Although my students and their families do not have a great deal of money, they have the most amount of passion, personality and desire out of any students I have met in my entire life. In the district they go to, 50% of students drop out of school before they are 18 years old. The students you see in this picture will be the ones that start to change that statistic. Through this experience, they will be on the path towards college and a wonderful, successful life. I am lucky to have the privilege to take these students to Costa Rica next spring.

My Project

The cameras donated toward our trip will be used by the students traveling to Costa Rica. It is important that the students capture the memories that they are experiencing so they can remember it for the rest of their lives. Following their return, the students and myself will work together to create scrapbooks of their trip to inspire other students to travel and experience the world. Having cameras will truly enable our students to feel connected to the culture, surroundings, and people they have the opportunity to experience while in Costa Rica. They will keep these pictures and scrapbooks for the rest of their lives. This artifact they create will be a great lever on college applications, job interviews, and their personal lives.

In sixth grade, these students "Went Places around the World in 180 Days,"€ in the world cultures classroom.

These same students have never actually left the state of Texas and this will be their first opportunity for them to experience the world for themselves. This incredible journey will remain forever in their minds, but by providing cameras, we can ensure they share these memories with their families and friends to inspire others to work hard and extend themselves into the world.
