My Students

Quenching the thirst of young readers,this is a challenge I love taking on. The second graders in my class just cannot get enough books in their little hands. Opening the world of literacy will open their minds to amazing adventures.

The young readers in my class are a very inquisitive group.

We are a family, made of all walks of life. The make up of our family has many cultures and languages, many different learning styles, a handful are in here "to learn the best way for them", and some receive free or reduced lunch or breakfast. We can all walk to our neighborhood pre-k to eighth grade school in our small city, allowing many friendships to form. They all love to read and chat about what is happening in their books. The children are on various reading levels and this will allow us to work together.

My Project

Receiving these chapter books will allow our class to enhance their reading skills. They have just"graduated" into reading chapter books from early readers. This would allow us to continue to challenge the children to read at or above their comfort level. We enjoy reading, discussing, creating, and enhancing fluency together. We have special times set aside during the week for reading our "special books" together. We talk about sequencing, settings, problems, solutions, characters, plots, as well as incorporating our spelling and grammar lessons into each chapter. We create an individual project at the end of our books to tell the story in our way and display for all in our school to view. Many of these children do not have access to books at home while some have never visited our free public libraries to borrow a book. Giving them the opportunity to have books at their fingertips will allow them to read and grow.

Think back to when you were a young child who had the love of reading; think what it would have been like if you did not have the access to the books you wanted to read.

Please help us give this precious gift of literacy to the children in my class. Help me continue their love of reading. I always tell my little ones, "If you can read, the world is yours...".
