Weather: Read It - Do It!

The cost of 15 Can It Rain Cats and Dogs?, Cloud Chart and Flash Card Set, Weather Watch, Rain Gauge, Indoor Outdoor Thermometer, Weather Ball Barometer, 3 Lady Bug Compass, and Kestrel 3000 Pocket Weather Meter is $421, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

I teach 5th grade in a self-contained setting, which means that I teach my students all subjects including reading, math, science, and social studies. A large percentage of our children are on free and reduced lunch, and I currently have 27 students in my classroom. We will soon begin our Weather Unit, and I would like to provide more opportunities for active, hands-on involvement. I also believe that thematic integration is important, so I would like to incorporate reading and math activities into this science unit. To begin with, I am requesting 15 copies of a wonderful children?s book called Can It Rain Cats and Dogs? Questions and Answers about Weather. I have used another book in this series with my class, and they are fascinated with its question-and-answer format. The book is much more interesting than a dry science textbook, and it provides the basic concepts of weather study in a fun, engaging manner. Since I?ll be integrating my reading and science instruction, I?ll be able to begin implementing the hands-on science component while they are still involved in the literature study. In the past I?ve had them create homemade weather instruments like a thermometer, barometer, anemometer, wind vane, and psychrometer. However, I always wished I had some scientific weather instruments that we could use to check the accuracy of our homemade instruments. Therefore I?m requesting a variety of basic weather instruments, along with a more complex instrument called a Kestrel 3000 which is a hand-held device used to determine humidity, wind speed, wind chill, and dew point. I first used a Kestrel 3000 as a part of an educational field trip to Belize, and I found it to be a simple and exciting way to collect basic weather data. I?ve always wanted to be able to share this with my class! My final request involves a set of study materials for learning about cloud types. We will integrate math into our activities by charting and graphing all of the weather data we collect. What excites me most about this project is imagining the excitement of my students! They love to read engaging science books, and they are absolutely thrilled when we include hands-on activities and take our studies outside. I truly believe that a ?Read It ? Do It? approach is the best way to involve kids in science!
