We Want to Play Too! Special Equipment for Special Students

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an inner city multiple disability classroom. Most of the students use wheelchairs for mobility and have health and physical issues that require specialized equipment for participation!
Our school is urban and funding has been dramatically cut in the past few years.
The school is growing by leaps and bounds! A new multiple disability classroom has been added to the building just this year.
Many students are challenged to participate in gross motor activities due to physical challenges. Other students have visual impairments, severe seizure disorders, limited mobility, challenges communicating and hearing impairments.
My Project
Imagine spending your day in a wheelchair. Not being able to access everything that your regular education friends do! Can you imagine going out on the playground and being able to interact with a special piece of equipment? At your level? With levers that you could move yourself!
This amazing playground panel by Kompan could open up doors of exploration never imagined before!! This quality piece of equipment can help support generations of students with special needs coming through our school!
Bowling is something most of us have never tried during gym or outside. Because we do not use our arms the same way we have never rolled a bowling ball. Usually sitting and watching was our only level of participation. Now we can bowl and knock down pins with our own adapted bowling ramp! Imagine experimenting with different types of balls! How fast will it go?? How many pins can I knock over?? We are no longer spectators or have to have an adult help us roll the ball!
My students want to participate in activities!
However, sometimes the equipment needed to be successful isn't available for them. Your donation to this project will help bridge the gap for my students! Their multiple disabilities often keep them from being "kids" and participating like their regular education peers! Opportunities to actively be involved at school helps them build life skills, their confidence and create memories to last a lifetime!
