Ms. Farrand from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need two 3/4 sized acoustic guitars for use by students in grades 1-8 in general music.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Have you ever experienced the joy of playing in a band or orchestra? I want my students to experience that, yet when I started at this school in 2011 I had few instruments. Students had not had music class in over 10 years. I hope to get a class set of guitars so students can play in a modern band.
I teach at 2 schools in metropolitan Illinois.
I teach general music to students in grades preK-8th to over 600 students. In general music students play instruments, sing, dance, and study music of genres around the world. This grant is intended for the school which had not had music for over 10 years prior to my employment there in fall of 2011. The student population at this school is approximately 30% African American, 30% Hispanic, 30% Caucasian, with the remainder of students being Asian. This school has very few instruments for students use. The students have voiced an interest in having additional instruments.
In this project I am requesting 2 acoustic guitar packs. Included in the pack is an acoustic guitar, guitar case, and a guitar strap. I am building a class set of guitars from donors like yourself. The guitars will be used by students as they learn chords, strum, learn to accompany themselves as they sing, perform music, improvise, and compose. When students perform music they will start by learning chords. After they have learned the basic skills, they will begin to perform popular and rock music. They will learn to play music of Bob Marley, Greenday, and others. Before the full class set of guitars arrives, small groups of students will learn to play the guitar. They will play the guitar as other students dance and play other instruments.
This project is so important because it will teach my students how to work together in a musical ensemble.
They will learn together, perform together, compose together, and have concerts together. The guitars will allow me to better address national standards in lesson plans, and students will be more motivated and engaged. Thank you for your consideration.
