My Students

One day I was reading a book called Rachel and the Lion, out loud, to my students. The story is placed in a foreign country, with tough living conditions. Many of my students are from this scenario. While reading the story, I realized how we needed diverse books the kids could identify with.

My kids are wonderful.

Wow, where do I begin?. Over half of my class are learning how to speak English. They enjoy sharing their culture and language in our classroom. Many started the school year not wanting to share their culture and customs. That has changed! They are proud of sharing what makes them special and enjoy teaching me their language and culture. We have kids in class from Russia, Africa, the Middle East, Mexico, the Philipines, and China. We are building the foundation of a caring community of life time learners that respect each others differences.

My Project

I have requested literature that reflects the background of my students. I plan to read the books requested, aloud to my students. We will use the books on CD in our reading center. In our class we have students lead reading sessions in groups. We often pair up the stronger readers in class with ones that are below level to help build confidence and promote strong reading bonds in class. The listening centers we could create with the donations would help our students build confidence with learning to read. The listening centers for reading would be key in aiding our many ESL children.

I cannot thank you enough for allowing our class the opportunity to build and strengthen our reading skills.

When the recess bell rang and my kids said, "Ahhh, don't stop reading yet", I realized I had them hooked! Please help to keep them inspired with great literature.
