Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year our students are required to take an increasing number of high-stakes assessments. These tests require students to comprehend academic texts within time limits, understand content-specific vocabulary, read for various purposes, and transition from one type of question to another.

Our school is an inner-city Title 1 public high school where over 300 students voluntarily visit the library every day.

Approximately 250 of our students are still acquiring the English language and will achieve proficiency faster if they read materials in English every day. Dozens of our students have learning disabilities which make them reluctant to read. Almost ninety percent come from low income families, so they don't have much disposable income for books. The school library is their main book source. In his 2004 edition of The Power of Reading: Insights from the Research, Stephen Krashen reviews the measurable effects of recreational reading. He concludes that "free voluntary reading results in better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development" (Krashen, Stephen. The Power of Reading, Second Edition: Insights from the Research. Libraries Unlimited, 2004, p. 17). Nothing improves reading comprehension more than practice.

My Project

Each year, certain books become popular with teens and are passed like wildfire from friend to friend throughout the student body. Recently The Hunger Games trilogy flies off the shelf. Teen issues novels by Ellen Hopkins and realistic romance by Simone Clare have been extremely popular, as well. And, yes, the genre of paranormal romance has only gained momentum since the dawn of the Twilight series. This year, students ask frequently for books on the Illuminati and other secret societies. They clamor for additional fun love stories by Simone Elkeles. They lose themselves in the fictional worlds created by extended sagas such as The Mortal Instruments, The House of Night, and the 39 Clues series. Our district has cut its annual library grant this year, reducing our collection development budget to zero. We are writing grants to find alternative funding sources for newly-published materials.

Our job as librarians is to foster a community of readers.

We keep our fingers on the pulse of teen culture-especially their reading preferences-and to help them connect with authors, series, books, and other readers with similar interests. We also create an environment where students will "talk up" their recent reads with their peers. If this grant is funded, these books will encourage eager readers to keep reading and to win over reluctant readers with their enthusiasm.
