This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wrinkly paper is the WORST! Every year, we make handmade paper. (Which is awesome!) We would love it even more, however, if we could flatten our paper just like professional papermakers!

I am the art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.

We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.

My Project

Our handmade paper comes from recycling scraps of construction paper that we have gathered all year from workrooms around the building. We spend a day learning about the process and watching a demonstration. On Earth Day, the paper-making day comes! We work as an assembly line, taking turns at each station. Finally, our paper dries and we get to write friendly letters and draw pictures on the paper that we made!

How great would it be to write our friendly thank you letters for this project and draw our pictures on flat, handmade paper? Just thinking about this gets me pumped for earth day!
