My students need a NOOK WiFi eReader to increase their interest in reading.

My Students

Were you ever intimidated by books? As a child (and even as an adult), I loved to read; unfortunately, many of my sixth graders are unenthusiastic when it comes to opening a novel. Literacy is so important! Please help me to foster a love for reading in my classroom!

More often than not, I can find my sixth graders listening to their MP3 players or playing their PSP games in their free time.

Needless to say, they love all things technology. When I asked them why they didn't pick up a book once in a while, they said it was because they weren't interesting enough. Books not interesting? What about Hatchet, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Bridge to Terabithia, The Giver, Old Yeller, or The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? The sixth grade books aren't interesting? So I asked my class, "What will it take to get you to read?" Technology was their reply.

My Project

A Nook would captivate my students, because they would be using technology to read. I could place many interesting sixth grade level novels on the Nook. Then, each student would be able to pick whatever story he or she wanted to read when it is time for him or her to borrow the Nook. A Nook would change the lives of my students, because it would encourage a love for reading. In addition, I have a reading program in my classroom that rewards students for reading five, ten, fifteen, and thirty books. I know my students would read more if they had a Nook. If they read more, they can win more prizes, which would build their confidence and make them feel like accomplished readers. All of these components would boost literacy in my classroom.
