I am preparing eighty-four 6th graders for Junior High Math next year. It is my goal that every student leave my class ready to excel at upper level math. I had the privilege of tutoring many of these students last year and know their unique challenges and abilities.
Our students are highly diverse from many different cultural and economic backgrounds.
One of the things I love about my students is how they support each other. They need strong adults who support them and believe in them as well. I consider our class successful when everyone walks into the classroom with the same confidence to achieve the same goal; to master math!
My Project
We will use these requested dry erase boards during the main class instruction time to give and get immediate feedback on math skills. The students can display their answers without having to call out or answer together and I can easily determine if the class has mastered a skill before moving on to the next. These will also be used during intervention and small groups. Many times the lesson changes as the students master each particular math component or we determine a weakness that is preventing mastery. Worksheets are oftentimes not flexible enough to be of assistance in these small groups.
My goal is to pull away from the traditional worksheets.
The students don't get feedback until they are finished and receive a grade. As a teacher, it is impossible to know immediately who has mastered a concept and who might need intervention or one-on-one assistance. These boards will allow us to quit wasting time, wasting paper and wasting teachable moments.
