Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Currently, we have a dry erase board, markers that run out too quickly, limited space and the same projector that MY teacher was using when I was in the 3rd grade. We have little to no avenue for students to see, model, and demonstrate the skills we're learning without hitting resource barriers, daily.

Our school is a Montessori, charter school nestled in a cozy neighborhood within the Southwest Houston area.

The children have an open concept classroom, so unfortunately we do have to struggle with noise, and visual distractions intermittently within all grade levels. A large portion of my students have transferred from other schools, and are not used to the style, and daily procedures of our charter school. Many of the 3rd grade students enjoy reading, and are extremely creative, however with limited resources, and access to technology, I feel that our students are not able to utilize their time in the classroom to the fullest. Time is often wasted writing problems on the board, and because we are still practicing classroom procedures (we have changed teachers recently), writing on the board can also lead to a lapse in behavior for various students throughout the day.

My Project

The document camera, and projector will allow us to overcome the huge barrier of visualization that we are having with students. While materials are limited, having a document camera and projector will widen the possibilities, so that students can experience educational modeling with the teacher, and be able to see, and follow along more easily. We recently split the third grade into two classes, and thus all of our textbooks have also been divided. We are currently sharing 8 science books in between 28 students at the moment, most of which are struggling in this subject to begin with. Wouldn't it be wonderful to simply throw the Science book under the camera, and have the students read aloud by looking up at the board? Students would also be able to bring their work up, and display their mathematical solutions, and work problems up on the camera. Our children need these simple technological upgrades to be given the chance to succeed to their fullest.

These donations will change the dynamic in which students interact throughout their math, science, reading, and social studies lessons.

With the ability to clearly display instructions, and quickly lay out their vocabulary, math problems, graphs, and reading passages, it will free up all of the time that gets taken away from my students when I have to turn toward the small dry erase board to write, and rewrite material onto the board.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
