My Students

What do you do when you have students afraid to come to school because of how they are treated when they're there? What do you do when fights break out because of something someone put on Facebook or Twitter? Well, thanks to AKJ Books and Townsends Press we are going to combat bullying.

At my public high school, students come from a community that has seen tremendous change over the last couple of years.

95% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and have many obstacles to overcome every day particularly gang violence and teen pregnancy. For the 130+ ninth graders I teach each year, this means that money for school supplies is few and far between. Many students are receiving notebooks, paper, and pencils from teachers, which means there is little money left in teaching budgets to purchase luxuries such as dry erase markers. Bullying is rampant throughout the school particularly cyber-bullying.

My Project

Recently, a large fight broke out in our school surrounding posts on Facebook and Twitter. The students didn't understand what was so bad about posting on the Internet. They did not consider their posts to be cyber-bullying. This is not the first fight at our school caused by Facebook or YouTube or Twitter. So, some of my students are eager to start a project about cyber-bullying and the causes it has. With the addition of an iPod touch and tablet, we'll have the technology to use the various apps during lunch and other non-instructional school time. In addition, show first hand to our students the impact of cyber-bullying and the other uses for this technology. We will be able to combat cyber-bullying, student by student. In order to better facilitate discussions surrounding bullying, my students need 4 copies of the Townsend Press Book "Bullying in Schools" a Bully-Free Jar, an iPod touch, and a tablet.

Our project is important because it will help curb the growing trend of bullying.

We want to do something before we have a student pay the ultimate priced of being bullied. We want to save our students from becoming another statistic. We will begin with a small group spreading the word with hopes that soon the entire school will be on the bully-free bandwagon and more education about the Internet and its dangers. Please help us as we strive to keep bullying out of our school, AKJ Books.
