My Students

"Oh, magic hour, when a child first knows she can read printed words!", A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, 1943. Learning to read is one of the most difficult yet satisfying skills a child can learn. When a child reads a word for the first time, it makes a lasting impression.

My children come from a low-income, high-crime area in Florida.

Despite unstable home environments, my children are resilient! They are enthusiastic, and have a never-ending thirst for knowledge. They keep me on my toes and I am thankful for every minute I have with them.

My Project

Many of my kids come without any educational foundation. Pre-K is an educational luxury that many cannot afford. Although they come to my classroom with almost no formal schooling skills, they leave my classroom learning to recognize letters, letter sounds, blending those sounds to read words, and most importantly, reading sight words. Sight words are words most commonly found in books. Students are expected to quickly recognize the words by sight without sounding them out. The more sight words they know, the more confident they become as emerging readers. Practicing sight words with these stories and cards with help them build a strong foundation that will ensure future reading success.

Like most schools, funding is consistently getting cut.
