Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bilingual 2nd grade is great! We learn in English & Spanish. Our biggest challenge is having access to more literature, resources and technology. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes

My second grade students are Spanish and English speaking children from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic and South America.

They are resilient, bright and eager to learn. Unfortunately we are in an urban school district in a high-poverty community where the children do not have access to many materials in Spanish. They are taught literacy, math, science and social studies in their native language while receiving daily English as a Second Language classes. They are quick learners who have read almost every Spanish book that I have in the classroom library. I'd love to have copies of the same book available in both languages. As they become stronger in English, they will be able to transition their love of reading in Spanish into reading in English, while enjoying the same stories they are familiar with.They also enjoy interacting with the Smart-Board. Adding more CDRoms to our collection will foster their budding skills.

My Project

The students enjoy Reading Workshop, where they can find a comfy spot in the classroom to get lost in a book. They love finding the same book available in an English version as well as its Spanish counterpart. They use what they know from their native Spanish, to transition to English. They are quick to make connections between the two versions of the same text and it fuels their passion to learn English while they flourish in Spanish. This school year we've received a Smart Board from the school district. We use it daily to practice math skills and engage in comprehension strategies and word work activities. They love to interact with peers as they problem solve. I'd like to add the requested software from Lakeshore to our currently limited collection of CDRoms in an effort to champion their growth.

This donation will revolutionize our classroom.

The students will learn that beautiful, fun, engaging books are for everyone, in both languages. They will have access to their own language which will remind them of their native country and help them transition to life in America. The other requested items with serve to develop our growing collection and reinforce a love for learning.
