My Students

My students are curious about the world around them. They love hands on learning experiences, and having an incubator will provide this experience for them!

Second graders are excited and curious about the world around them.

During the school year, we have a special opportunity to study life cycles and watch animals grow and change. Nothing is more exciting for a child than caring for chicken eggs and watching them hatch into fluffy chicks. They find great joy in hands-on learning experiences, which both give them a deeper understanding of how the world works and foster a sense of wonder.

My Project

Our second grade science standards state that students will understand and compare various life cycles. Our school district provides resources to meet this standard, but they only teach students about the life cycles of insects. My students found the process of metamorphosis fascinating and loved watching their mealworms transform into beetles, yet their understanding of life cycles is incomplete. They have a difficult time distinguishing between animals who go through metamorphosis and those who “just get bigger”. Having an incubator in our classroom will allow my students to witness the life cycle of an animal who does not go through metamorphosis. My students will be able to effectively compare the life cycles of animals who do and do not go through metamorphosis. They will ever forget their experience of monitoring the eggs and watching them hatch. It will be even more special to them because they will have had a role in the care of the eggs and chicks.

My students will get to experience one of the most exciting wonders of nature.

From the day we get the eggs, to the day they start to wiggle and crack the shells and turn into fluffy chicks, it will be a learning experience that will be memorable and valuable for them. It will further their understanding of how some animals go through a complete change while growing, and some just grow bigger and do not change much at all. The students will be proud of how they cared for the eggs and the chicks!
