Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the teacher librarian (Library Media Specialist) at Grandview Elementary School. We are a K-3 high-needs public school: 400 children: 80% free lunch; 18% English Language Learners; 13% children with special needs.

Our students lack critical background knowledge required to make connections to core curriculum in social studies and science. Additionally, many are reading below grade level. Our special needs students have a difficult time concentrating in a sit-down learning environment. The Playaway books will allow them to build background knowledge about other cultures. Additionally, this project will tie-in movement and literacy as the children "Walk Around the World" while listening to the Playaways during open library and recess.

A Playaway is a self-contained digital recording unit for single books which children listen to with headphones. Playaways eliminate the complexity and cost of MP3 players -- no downloading, no buttons or knobs. The Playaways selected for this grant proposal feature sixteen titles which take children to Africa, China, Japan, India etc. The children will begin their tours in the library by signing out a Playaway. They will listen as they walk around our playground or around our building in inclement weather. Additionally, each child will be given a pedometer to record his steps as he travels. Our special needs children, who are quite active, will have an opportunity to move as they learn. When the children return to the library from their journeys, they will record some of the information they learned in our web-based travelogue. They will have the opportunity to podcast their travel notes.

This grant will benefit every child in our school over the course of the year. The teachers are excited about supplementing this project with maps of world destinations which will be posted around both our out door and in door walking trails. Thank you for supporting us as we help our children to expand their horizons and their knowledge of people and places around the world.
