Variety is the Spice of Life!

My students need 160 copies of 4 multicultural novels, including "The Island of the Blue Dolphins" and "Esperanza Rising".

My Students

In this melting pot called America it is imperative that students realize and embrace the fact that there is a wonderfully multicultural world outside their zip code if they are going to become productive members of society at large.

My seventh grade classes consist of wonderful boys and girls who come from varied economic strata and live in an inner city environment of row homes, public transportation, and corner delis.

Some pass their time playing video games or computer games inside because they do not like going outside. Others enjoy playing wire ball, stick ball, riding bikes in the street or playing freedom. Elaborate vacations and trips are not something that they have been exposed to. Many have never left the confines of their neighborhood. I have enjoyed hearing them make plans to visit new friends. They attend a charter school that they gained admittance to through a lottery, and so the children come from various sections or neighborhoods of the city. The standards are very high in this exceptional educational environment. Teachers and support staff move heaven and earth to help their students succeed. All subscribe to the mantra that it takes a village to raise a child.

My Project

I am requesting a set of multicultural novels to expose my students to events, beliefs and traditions that are different from their own and to show them that there is more to life than X-Box and Facebook. Through literature, the children will develop and strengthen literacy skills that they will need to succeed in high school. As a class we will read Esperanza Rising, Treasure Island, and Red Scarf Girl. To develop independent reading skills, we will read Island of the Blue Dolphins independently as homework assignments and then later discuss in class. Through the words of others, we can come to know and understand the various aspects of their cultures. I look forward to wonderful projects and activities about the food, clothes, customs and social events mentioned in the novels.

This project is vital to their success, not only in high school, but also in a professional adult world filled with people from all races, creeds and cultures.

As successful adults, my students cannot shy away from people and circumstances just because they are different. They need the knowledge to avoid making stereotypical generalizations that could be interpreted as offensive or insensitive. When I replace ignorance with knowledge, I replace prejudice with tolerance and open-mindedness.
