This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach my classroom chemistry through experiments with water. I teach my classroom physics through s.t.e.a.m. driven projects. I teach my classroom biology through hands on exploration of the world around them. I push my students to answer the questions "why" and "how".

I work with around 150 students in a Title One school.

I work with all types of students who bring all types of qualities, hopes, dreams, frustrations, hardships and needs to the classroom. My school is a pillar in the community, a group of individuals who want to see their students grow and thrive. My classroom is one of the final stepping stones to a doorway, which can open a world of hopes and dreams.

My Project

My students will use this Van de Graaff generator to see what they never really knew existed. My students know the word electricity but have never really seen it. They now know what an electron is but do not fully grasp what it does. My students will use this generator to experience energy. They will be able to make their hair stand on end and explain what is happening. They can hold a light bulb in their hand and gasp as it lights up in their hand. They can see energy make a change.

Just as this generator makes a spark when you hold a sphere close to the shell, I want to make a spark of imagination and curiosity with my students.

Like any topic of study, a student needs a spark; a reason to dig deeper; a reason to understand "why". I want to give them a spark and see if it will give them a reason to dig deeper and discover the "why". Good teachers give answers to questions. Great teachers lead students to discover answers to questions. I want to be a great teacher.
