Urban Gardening: What Came First, The Chicken Or The Egg?

My students need an incubator, quail rails for the incubator, brooder to raise the quail, and water/feeders.

My Students

What were some of your most memorable lessons in school? Was it page thirty-three in your math text book or the life cycle worksheet in science class? More than likely it wasn't the worksheets or your text books. Students retain more information when they are having fun and are excited about learning.

Our school is located in a suburb of Cleveland.

I service students from our suburb and surrounding cities including Cleveland. I service a variety of learners that come to us needing intervention to enrichment. Parents choose our school because we believe in providing every child an opportunity to obtain an excellent education built on a foundation of character education for life long success. We believe all children deserve an exceptional education in a safe, caring, nurturing environment. We create a student focused community of global learners where children excel, are responsible, ethical world citizens, prepared for success in career, college and life.

My Project

We are a community school! Our goal is to weave our learning into every aspect of the school and community. Part of early childhood learning is learning about the life cycle. We also have a school garden club that is working on creating a community garden. Finally, we are trying to teach the students how to be ethical world citizens. In the classroom, our students will learn about the life cycle of a quail. They will incubate and hatch the eggs, raise the chicks to maturity, and watch the hens lay new eggs. The students will then have an opportunity to sample, if they choose, the eggs. Any excess eggs will be donated to our local food pantry or families in need. The droppings from the chicks/hens can be used as fertilizer for our garden. That leads into the life cycle of plants. Each classroom will have their own garden bed. The excess vegetables will be donated to our local food pantry or families in need.

As I asked earlier what lessons do you remember most?

I believe that hands-on learning helps reach all levels of learners in a classroom. The students will remember one, five, and ten years from now when they learned about life cycles. This project will teach students responsibility, the life cycle, urban gardening, how everything connects and how to contribute to the community by giving back.
