Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember growing plants in school when you were young or had the chance to eat something that you've grown? Our planting projects' goal is to involve our students with hands-on, exciting, and engaging experiments for our urban students who have limited exposure to plants and gardens.

Our high school students live in a high-poverty neighborhood in urban New Jersey, surrounded by concrete and cement.

They have little exposure to plants and gardens, so our classroom provides a rare opportunity for kids to go green by growing green plants to study and eat. Learning about growing plants is vital for our students' academic growth, but also for their health and well-being. Most of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch assistance, and receive minimal fresh vegetables and fruits throughout their school day. Learning about growing and eating plants impacts them now and down the road. There's no twisting arms here - my students LOVE eating their vegetables! They love growing plants and feel pride and responsibility in what they produce. Now is the time to encourage active gardening projects and encourage nutritious food choices. These kids are our future scientists, environmentalists, and engineers. If not now, when?

My Project

Thanks to previous donations, we have begun a classroom garden to grow and study plants. These days my students race into my classroom to measure, compare, and examine their projects; their excitement is so refreshing! My students' latest passion is for growing indoor terrariums in our classroom to study ecosystems. Their goal is to design, assemble, maintain, and study their own ecosystems throughout the year. The supplies and materials we are requesting are the basic building blocks for making plant and animal terrariums to incorporate into our science investigation lab component. Kids have chosen the kits and materials on our list, which is an important part in their taking ownership in the project. Thank you for considering supporting our project!

Our students are required to pass a state-wide Biology Proficiency exam to graduate from high school, and our goal is to use their enthusiasm to strengthen science skills to assist with exam preparation.

We believe that their interest and enthusiasm for these types of hands-on projects will stimulate interest in science and cultivate our future scientific leaders.
