Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn" -Albert Einstein. My goal is to create a learning environment where all students are engaged in discovery and feel safe to take risks. My classroom is interactive, and students and I enjoy learning together.

My classroom is an exciting place where students often tell me they didn't like science until they came to my class.

With our new tools, students will engage in real-world problem solving by interacting with simulations and real-time science research. In seventh grade science, we learn about chemistry and energy in living things in the first semester, which is often difficult for students to visualize. Having access to simulations will increase student comprehension. In second semester, our focus is on ecosystems and the earth. There is so much publicly available data that my students can analyze and examine alongside professional scientists. It is essential that students learn to code, and what better way than with Spheros? My students face an exciting future, where many of their future jobs have have not yet been created. I may not be able to prepare them for specific job-related skills, but I can teach my students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and collaborators.

My Project

There are so many resources available online to make science come to life, but unfortunately quite a few are flash-based and therefore not compatible with our iPads. A group of Chromebooks will allow me to use laptops in station work with students, allowing them to explore interactive science simulations, participate in citizen-scientist research, and watch real-time feeds of our natural world. Additionally, Google Draw is one of my favorite tools, but it does not function on iPads. Students can use this program to create drawings; the Next Generation Science Standards focus heavily on students creating and revising models. In preparing my students for 21st century skills they need, coding is an essential component of a well-rounded education. Spheros are a fun way to get students excited about coding. I can't wait to have my students create mazes, puzzles, and artwork with Sphero robots and block-based coding programs.

Statistically, my school is 83% socioeconomically disadvantaged, and many students are food insecure.

Our students look to school to provide stability, structure, and adults who genuinely take an interest in their personal and academic well-being. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, some of my students are not regularly exposed to rigorous and enriching academic opportunities outside of school. My goal is to engage students in real-world science that ignites a passion for learning.
