Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For several years I would teach my students a paper puppet project, but ever since our budget cuts several years ago I have not been able to teach this project. This was a very popular project and one that my students truly enjoyed, I would like to teach it once again.
I have approximately 160 students with a variety of backgrounds, both culturally and economically.
I enjoy being in the presence of such creative students every day, but, with budget cuts, I am no longer able to provide my students with a large range of lessons. My lessons have to be geared around the supplies I can supply and for the past few years that has been only paper, pencils and paint. I would like to provide my beginning students with the opportunity to build something with their hands. Now a days, students are no longer being provided with hands on activities, especially in the high school level. I'd like to provide them with the opportunity to create something three-dimensional.
My Project
My students need paper. For many years I would teach my students how to create elaborate hand puppets out of different colored paper. With the budget cuts the Fine Arts have suffered in recent years, I have not been able to teach this particular lesson. I have students that have older siblings that inquire about this lesson and it saddens me to say to them that we can no longer do this lesson due to budget cuts. I am hoping to do this lesson as the last lesson of the year, something that my students will enjoy while learning how to hand build.
There was once a time when handbuilding was a way of life, now, many young students have never been exposed to the craft of handbuilding.
I believe that if students were more exposed to handbuilding, they would be more appreciative of their surroundings and the time and craftsmanship it takes to build a product. Building with paper is a first step towards learning how to work with their hands and hopefully awaken in them the desire to learn more.
